Exercise

Regular exercise is especially good for people with Diabetes.  On a daily basis exercise can help you maintain your blood sugar within normal range.  In fact research has found that regular exercise can actually prevent Type II Diabetes. Low impact exercises that use large muscles, such as walking, swimming, low impact aerobic classes or stationary bike are the best.

Some of the benefits of physical activity are as follows:

  • lower blood sugar
  • helps control body weight
  • reduces risk of heart attack
  • reduces stress
  • promotes strength & flexibility

Although exercise is very beneficial, DO NOT begin an exercise program without consulting with your doctor. Complications such as hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) can occur and if your blood sugars are > 240 mg/dl because of the risk for keytones. Always check your blood sugar before exercising and make sure you always carry emergency food in case of low blood sugar during exercise.
